The History Of AL-KO

History & Today

From the time of inception, the company quickly grew to become the leading provider in the areas of automotive technology, garden equipment and commercial air conditioning.

At the end of 2015, AL-KO Kober separated its Vehicle Technology solutions forming AL-KO Vehicle Technology (“VT”) and began a new journey with DexKo Global Inc – formed through the combination of AL-KO Vehicle Technology and Dexter.

The combination of these two companies creates a global leader in the trailer axle and chassis supply industry with a combined 130 years of trailer and caravan componentry experience, more than 5,000 personnel, 42 production facilities and 25 distribution centres globally.

Still true to the original aim, AL-KO Vehicle Technology is on a constant quest for quality, innovation and sophisticated functionality combined with contemporary design, comfort and reliability now with the support of a growing global network.

In Australia

The company has a long and proud history in Australia spanning back to 1946, when Hornby Engineering was founded and started to produce axles in South Melbourne. In 1974 this company was acquired by Girlock and with the acquisition of two other companies in Sydney and Brisbane it became Australia’s largest company in its field.

In 1988 the German AL-KO Kober Group acquired the company, which signalled the start of a new era of international involvement in Australasia.
The company’s strong growth has been driven by product range expansion and innovation that has further enhanced AL-KO’s position as market leader in its field.
AL-KO’s Australasian head office and main manufacturing facility is located in Melbourne, with further factories and offices in Sydney, Brisbane and New Zealand.
